Centroid Calculation

Certain spatial operations (i.e., variogram calculation) require estimating distances between geographic polygons. Such estimates are typically calculated as the distance between the geographic centroids (center of mass) of these polygons.

Centroids are in general located inside the geographic polygon shape. Sometimes for irregularly shaped polygons, the centroid may be found outside the polygon boundaries when viewing the centroids on a map.
